How to choose the right timber for your home

Choosing a timber is one of the more enjoyable decisions in any interiors project, but it pays to think beyond looks alone. The right choice balances the character of the grain with how hard-wearing you need the finish to be.

Oak remains a favourite for good reason: it is strong, forgiving and ages beautifully. Walnut brings a darker, richer tone that suits more formal rooms, whilst ash and maple give a lighter, contemporary feel. If you prefer a painted finish, a close-grained board gives the smoothest result.

Think, too, about where the piece will live. Kitchens and boot rooms take a great deal of daily wear, so a durable finish matters; a dressing room or study can afford a more delicate one.

If in doubt, ask us for samples. Seeing a finish in your own light, against your own walls, tells you far more than any photograph.
