Matte White Island

A kitchen arranged around a single matte white island, its handleless fronts running unbroken from worktop to plinth. Overhead, a suspended stainless-steel canopy carries lighting and open shelving; behind, taupe wall cabinetry sits above a pale veined-stone splashback. A dark counter extends the island into a breakfast bar for two, keeping cooking and conversation within the same quiet room.

The project

The brief here was calm rather than spectacle. The island is treated as a single made-to-measure volume: matte white door fronts with no visible handles, a slim worktop and a recessed dark plinth that lets the cabinetry appear to float above the stone-tiled floor. Around it, the perimeter run is kept deliberately low and quiet, so the eye travels along one continuous line of worktop beneath the window’s filtered light.

Materials are held to a small, quiet palette. Soft ivory cabinetry meets warm taupe wall units, with a veined pale-stone splashback lit from beneath the upper run; overhead, a suspended steel canopy gathers lighting and open shelving into a single element. At the island’s far end, a dark counter steps away to seat two on upholstered stools — a place for coffee and conversation while the working side, with its twin taps, carries on.
