Polished Steel Island

The intent was contrast held in careful balance: a single reflective volume set against a dark, recessive perimeter. Tall cabinetry in smoked ebony runs behind the island and along the cooking wall, absorbing light so the steel island reads as the room’s one bright object. To the left, a glazed display wall with slim dark frames turns everyday glassware and ceramics into a quiet composition, lit softly from within.

Materials are few and plainly stated. The island’s brushed steel faces are answered by a suspended canopy overhead, which carries extraction, lighting and an open shelf for herbs and glassware. Broad handleless doors in a muted taupe conceal deep storage within the display wall, while the ebony-toned run behind holds the working surfaces. Underfoot, a pale speckled floor lifts the room, keeping the dark joinery from feeling heavy and leaving generous space to circulate, cook and gather.
