Brushed Steel Galley

A galley kitchen arranged around a single brushed steel island, flanked on either side by full-height cabinetry behind smoked glass. Everything the room needs — ovens, glassware, dry stores — sits within the two facing walls, leaving the centre of the space clear for cooking, while a suspended steel shelf carries the eye towards the windows beyond.

The project

The intent was symmetry: two runs of fitted cabinetry face one another across the room, each combining closed doors in a soft matt grey with glazed display sections lit from within. Glassware and tableware read as quiet still-lifes behind the smoked glass, while open shelving keeps everyday stores close to hand. Between them, the island stands alone — hob, sink and preparation surface gathered on a single brushed steel volume raised on a recessed plinth.

Steel does most of the work here — the island fronts, the suspended shelf overhead and the canopy above the hob — its brushed surface softening reflections rather than throwing them back. Behind, a dark panelled wall in a deep ebony tone anchors the composition, with integrated ovens set flush into the cabinetry to one side. A pale, lightly speckled floor keeps the palette from becoming heavy, and the windows at either end bring daylight down the length of the room.
